Brookhaven Retreat Sponsors Linehan Institute Award Benefit May 20
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) June 04, 2015 -- Brookhaven Retreat, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with emotional and mental health challenges, and/or substance abuse issues, served as the Platinum Sponsor of the Linehan Institute Award Benefit on May 20 in Manhattan.
Co-hosted by the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington, each year the event raises funds for the advancement of mental health education, compassion and research.
Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP, a professor of psychology and adjunct professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, developed Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to treat the most severe mental health disorders and suicidal behavior. Linehan, who founded The Linehan Institute, has dedicated her life to working with people whose lives are at risk from incapacitating psychological problems.
Jacqueline Dawes, founder of Brookhaven Retreat, was accompanied by some of her staff members, including on-staff psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Ownby, primary therapists Katherine Myers, Marlaina Kinkaid and Lana Wilcox, admission liaison Ana Garcia-Smith, as well as consultants Dr. Lynn Swisher, and Scott Migdole. They had the distinct pleasure of meeting and chatting with Linehan during cocktail hour on the Midtown Loft rooftop.
Dawes says, “It was delightful to meet Dr. Linehan, whose approach to therapy is, as I see it, progressive, nourishing, nurturing and insightful. As she does her data collection and defines and develops new tools, we test them and use them, and we too experience very positive growth in our clients and the development on their journeys.”
In clinical trials around the world, DBT has effectively treated Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), substance dependence, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders. Brookhaven Retreat attended the benefit in support of those organizations and individuals recognized for their significant contributions to the fight against the stigma of mental illness and providing services to those in need.
Aside from dinner and a performance by singer-songwriter Kappy Arnold, awards were given to celebrate individuals and organizations who have contributed to the outreach of DBT, such as Benedict Carey, New York Times journalist and Arthur Evans of the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services, among others.
Dawes adds, “We fully support the Linehan Institute in all their efforts and appreciate being able to use the mechanisms as they develop.”
