Buckeye Health Plan Promotes September National Baby Safety Month Awareness with Onesie Giveaway
(PRWEB) September 16, 2015 -- Buckeye Health Plan (Buckeye) is recognizing National Baby Safety Month by giving away “onesie” infant bodysuits to its members at its “Diaper Day” and “Baby Shower” events beginning in September. The theme of this year’s Baby Safety Month is “A Room with a Safe View,” which highlights “hidden hazards” and reminds parents to create a safe environment for their baby.
The bodysuit onesie carries a “this side up” logo as a way to remind parents to place babies on their backs to sleep, which helps reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants aged one month to one year.
In addition to SIDS, the top 10 hidden hazards in the home, according to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, are: magnets, recalled products, loose change, furniture tip overs, pot handles, loose rugs, detergent pods, hot mugs, cords and button batteries. Ensuring all caregivers, including grandparents and other relatives, are aware of these potential hazards is the first step in preventing avoidable accidents and injuries.
“One of Buckeye’s top priorities is to improve child and maternal health and help reduce the number of infant deaths in Ohio,” said Bruce Hill, Buckeye President and CEO. “We are proud to host Diaper Day and Baby Shower events because they are a fun and informative way for moms and moms-to-be to pick up some helpful information on keeping their babies safe and healthy.”
Buckeye hosts Diaper Day and Baby Shower events on a quarterly basis across Ohio for eligible members who are pregnant or have delivered a baby within the past year. These events are used to educate on topics such as:
• Keeping their child healthy
• The role of the Pediatrician
• Health Checks and well-baby visits
• Helpful hints to keep your baby safe
• Safe Sleep
• Why they need to go to prenatal visits
• Programs and incentives Buckeye offers
• Tips on how to stay healthy
“National Baby Safety Month is designed to help educate parents and caregivers on safeguarding their environment for infants,” said Brad Lucas, M.D., Buckeye Chief Medical Officer - Medical Affairs. “Buckeye wants to help by raising awareness of hazards folks might not think about. We want to remind parents to place babies on their backs to sleep, and we’re hoping these ‘this side up’ onesies will serve as a playful reminder.”
While SIDS remains the leading cause of death among infants, rates are declining. According to the CDC, the rate has decreased considerably from 130.3 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 39.7 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2013. Public education is key in continuing to decrease the number of SIDS-related deaths.
