CACREP Accreditation Awarded to Western Seminary's M.A. in Counseling Program
Portland, OR (PRWEB) February 05, 2015 -- Western Seminary’s M.A. Counseling degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling has been accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) as of January 26, 2015.
Western’s counseling M.A. is already approved by the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists and has provided training for students seeking a counseling education for the past 20 years. The additional accreditation from CACREP provides national recognition that the program meets the standards necessary for professional competence (as determined by the profession) and will result in added benefits for graduates. Students who graduated from Western’s M.A. in Counseling program in the spring semester of 2014 or thereafter will be recognized as graduates from a CACREP-accredited program.
Counseling Program Director Dr. Kay Bruce remarked, “Graduates of the program may find the increased status gives greater appeal to potential employers, makes national certification as a counselor available, permits counselors to provide services to veterans, and creates greater ease for licensure in many other states.”
There are currently only a few national seminaries that have earned this distinction, strategically positioning Western to offer top-tier training for counselors who wish to build their practice on faith-based values. “Our unwavering commitment to biblical integration, paired with a counselor education that meets the quality assurance of CACREP accreditation, results in a counseling program of excellence. This accreditation represents a hallmark of achievement and a legacy for generations of Christian counselors to come,” comments Bruce.
The accreditation of Western’s program follows a recent announcement from the National Board for Certified Counselors that requires counselors who wish to become nationally certified to be graduates of a CACREP-accredited program.
