California Department of Pesticide Regulation To Restrict Poisons Used For Rodent Control by Homeowners and Non Licensed Companies
(PRWEB) July 22, 2013 -- The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) has new regulations in the works concerning second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). The poison baits affected by this new regulation contain the active ingredients of brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum or difethialone. The concern is mainly of secondary poisoning of predators eating rodents that have eaten these baits. The active ingredient of these SGARs stays in the animal’s system for a long time and is reported to affect non-target wildlife, including mammals and predator birds.
The new DPR Regulation was just posted on their site on July 19, 2013 for public access. The new regulation will now make SGARs a restricted material and will not be sold in retail outlets. These poisons will also be sold only in larger quantities that would be used by licensed pest control firms to discourage non-licensed operator sales.
First generation rodenticides will still be available to non-licensed consumers. These FGRs are known as multi-feed, requiring the rodent to consume bait multiple times to build up enough in their system to become lethal. The FGR's are considered safer and less hazardous to non-target wildlife.
The new regulation also requires SGARs to be placed in bait stations. These bait stations will have to be within 50 feet of a man-made structure. Their determination is that 50 feet is a large enough barrier to properly protect that structure from rodents. Exceptions may be made where evidence of pests are greater than the 50 foot range such as garbage areas.
The biggest impact is expected to be on businesses that currently do their own pest control. These companies, if not licensed, will no longer have these SGAR's available to them. They will have either use FGR baits, mechanical traps or hire a licensed pest control firm to perform the work for them.
Companies such as Rodent Guys use integrated pest management control where non-poison methods are utilized where feasible. Trapping is their main solution to reduce their poison usage along with carbon monoxide gas injection for burrowing rodents such as gophers. Ground squirrels are another example of a rodent that can be controlled without the use of poisons.
Rodent Guys uses a combination of live and lethal traps along with carbon monoxide gas for ground squirrel control. This minimizes the risk to non-target animals and gives good control. The drawback to this method is it is more expensive than poison methods.
