California Healthcare Institute Applauds Governor Brown on State of the State Address
La Jolla, CA (PRWEB) January 22, 2014 -- Today, Governor Jerry Brown delivered his annual State of the State address in Sacramento and included top mention of the biomedical community in the state. CHI-California Healthcare Institute has worked closely with the Governor and his Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) to prioritize the needs of the ever-expanding life sciences ecosystem in California.
While the industry in our state directly employs nearly 270,000 people, there are nearly 500,000 more Californians whose jobs are connected to the biomedical enterprise. These are computer programmers, construction workers, consultants, delivery people, attorneys and many others who are supported by the biomedical presence in their community. CHI and the biomedical ecosystem it represents applaud the Governor for being a true partner in supporting the state's life sciences industry and its continued investment into new medicines and technologies for patients around the world.
Just last week, Governor Brown met with the CHI board of directors for an informative conversation on how the state can continue its strong partnership with the biomedical community in years to come. “Governor Brown has proven time and again to be a staunch supporter of the biomedical community in the state,” said CHI’s interim President and CEO, Todd Gillenwater. “His efforts last year to spearhead a tax credit for innovators in the state sent a clear message of support for this industry that is proud to call California home.”
The Governor’s State of the State address directly highlighted not only the biomedical community, but also the vast community of top-level research institutions in California. “Four out of the world’s 20 leading academic bioscience institutions are located here in California: UCSF and Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford and UC San Diego,” said Brown in his speech.
"As the statewide public policy organization representing California's leaders in biomedical research and development, CHI applauds Governor Brown for his thoughtful and demonstrated commitment to supporting our job-creating industry,” said Gillenwater. “His leadership in eliminating duplicative state inspections at biomedical facilities was championed and supported by CHI members.”
2014 has many opportunities for CHI and our membership to work closely with legislators in Sacramento and the Governor’s office to spur innovation, breakthrough medicines and technologies.
