Irvine, CA (PRWEB) August 13, 2015 -- More than 700 graduates, family members, friends, faculty and other academic staff convened on Saturday, August 8 at The Irvine Barclay Theatre for California Southern University’s 37th annual commencement ceremony.
The graduates represented states from coast to coast, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. Graduates from Switzerland, Canada, Poland, Russia and Nigeria were also in attendance. Ranging in age from 24 to 80, the graduates were awarded degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels from the deans of CalSouthern’s Schools of Behavioral Sciences, Business and Law.
The program included a keynote address delivered by Dr. Richard Winn, a nationally recognized leader and authority in higher education, recently retired from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Additional remarks were given by University President Dr. Caroll Ryan and graduate of the Doctor of Business Administration program Dr. David L. Tuyo II, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Florida-based Power Financial Credit Union.
As part of the day’s events, Dr. William O’Leary, a forensic psychologist from Long Island, New York and a 2013 graduate of the university’s Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program, was awarded the CalSouthern Difference Award for his tireless efforts to fight homelessness and reduce the incidence of child sexual abuse in Nassau County and across New York State. Dr. Nancy R.F. Miller, a 2015 CalSouthern PsyD graduate, was recognized for her research regarding the development of sustainable mental health care systems after humanitarian crises, utilizing her field work in post-earthquake Haiti.
“CalSouthern’s annual commencement ceremony is always the highlight of the university’s academic calendar,” says Dr. Ryan. “It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only our graduates’ academic accomplishments, but also their remarkable and dedicated work in their fields and in their communities. It was a moving and truly inspiring event.”
