On April 1, 1985, three NCUA executives — Ed Callahan, Chip Filson, and Bucky Sebastian — founded Callahan & Associates. The co-founders were proponents of the credit union system and deeply committed to helping its institutions prosper and embrace their cooperative difference.
Callahan’s founders launched their business with three goals in mind:
1. Build a database with a listing for every credit union in the United States.
2. Give individual industry institutions the ability to see themselves as part of the greater system.
3. Bring collaborative opportunities to the industry during a time when innovation was a new idea to many leaders.
“We started with a blank business plan,” says co-founder Chip Filson, who now serves as the company’s board chairman. “Ed had a different mentality when it came to de-regulation. He believed credit unions — not the government — were responsible for their own actions. We took that thought and made it a goal to offer a holistic view of the industry.”
Callahan maintains the same cooperative spirit and enthusiasm for credit unions that propelled the company’s founders — making the firm a trusted credit union resource for more than three decades. Although the industry, regulations, and technological developments have drastically changed, the firm’s mission and dedication remain constant.
