Calling All Math Teachers to Baltimore, Oct. 16–18
Reston, VA (PRWEB) October 02, 2013 -- The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) will host a regional conference and exposition in Baltimore, October 16–18. The conference invites educators to learn effective teaching strategies and listen to exciting speakers who will inspire them to become better teachers.
Presenters during the conference will come from all areas of Maryland, including Westminster, Rockville, and Salisbury, as well as Baltimore. Presentations will also be given by educators from surrounding states and throughout the United States, and from as far away as Mumbai. The conference will offer more than 200 sessions and workshops, covering all levels, pre-K–grade 12. The sessions support NCTM’s yearlong focus on number and operations, as well as a wealth of topics including STEM instruction, formative assessment, the Common Core State Standards, and instructional best practices.
Keynote speaker Sten Odenwald, with the National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton, Virginia, will discuss the rich tapestry of math challenges that astrophysics and cosmology offer for students. Odenwald’s Opening Session, “How to Explore the Cosmos with Just a Little Math,” will kick off the conference on Wednesday, October 16, 5:30–7:00 p.m., at the Baltimore Convention Center, Ballroom I/II.
On Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, an interactive workshop will offer tips for all new and preservice teachers on how to manage classrooms, work with parents, find engaging lessons, and handle homework. The sessions will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Hilton, Key Ballroom 8.
On Thursday, October 17, NCTM President Linda Gojak will examine how a rich problem can be the umbrella for incorporating mathematical practice with mathematics content in the elementary grades. This session, “It’s Raining Rich Problems!” will offer some practical suggestions to turn this vision into practice. This session is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to noon in the Convention Center, Ballroom III.
All conference activities will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center and Hilton Baltimore. In addition, hundreds of the latest education products will be on display in the NCTM Exhibit Hall of the Baltimore Convention Center on Thursday, October 17, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Friday, October 18, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
