CalSTRS Board Member Sharon Hendricks Honored as Advocate of the Year
West Sacramento, Calif. (PRWEB) February 29, 2016 -- The Faculty Association of California Community Colleges has named Teachers’ Retirement Board Vice-Chair Sharon Hendricks a co-recipient of the John Vasconcellos Advocate of the Year award for 2016. Sharing the honor with Ms. Hendricks is co-recipient Lynn Shaw, an instructor of electrical technology at Long Beach City College.
The award was presented yesterday at FACCC’s Advocacy & Policy Conference, in Sacramento. The honor is awarded annually to a full time California community college faculty member who demonstrates exemplary work in statewide advocacy. Ms. Hendricks is a communication studies instructor at Los Angeles City College. She was elected in 2011 to the California State Teachers’ Retirement System Teachers’ Retirement Board where she serves as board vice chair and Investment Committee chair.
“This is richly deserved recognition for the tireless commitment Sharon puts forth on behalf of all the educators of California,” said CalSTRS Board Chair Harry Keiley. “Sharon’s dedicated service as a CalSTRS board member has resulted in a better and more secure pension for all of our members.”
“I am honored to receive this prestigious award, named for one of the great heroes of education, California public policy, and indeed, the human spirit—the late State Senator John Vasconcellos,” said Ms. Hendricks.
Ms. Hendricks serves on the faculty at Los Angeles City College as president of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1512 chapter and retirement liaison for the Los Angeles College Faculty Guild. She is active in the Community College Council of the California Federation of Teachers. Ms. Hendricks participates in a working group for the Trustee Leadership Forum for Retirement Security as part of the Initiative for Responsible Investment at the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is a trustee leader on the AFT Trustee Council and treasurer for the Los Angeles Trustee Network. She also serves on the NCPERS board, participating on the Education and Healthcare committees.
Ms. Hendricks and Ms. Shaw were nominated by faculty colleagues and selected for the award after consideration of candidates from across the state.
