CalSTRS Names Global Equity Director
West Sacramento, Calif. (PRWEB) June 25, 2014 -- The California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) announced today the selection of June Kim as the Director of Global Equity, CalSTRS’ largest asset class, valued at more than $100 billion.
Ms. Kim will lead a staff of 12 that oversees a $105.8 billion global equity portfolio, representing 57 percent of the CalSTRS investment portfolio. CalSTRS global equity staff works with more than 60 external active managers who oversee nearly two thirds of the U.S. and the entire non-U.S. portfolio. She starts at CalSTRS July 21.

Ms. Kim succeeds Trish Taniguchi who held the position from 2010 to 2013. Elleen Okada preceded Taniguchi as director from 1997 to 2008.

Ms. Kim comes to CalSTRS with 19 years of investment experience, having spent the last seven and a half years as principal investment officer for global equities at the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA). Prior to LACERA, she was an investment officer at the Los Angeles Water & Power Employees’ Retirement Plan.
Before joining the public sector, Ms. Kim managed U.S. and non-U.S. equity index funds as well as quantitative equity strategies for leading index fund providers such as Northern Trust Global Investments as a vice president and as a Principal at Barclays Global Investors. Her experience also includes working for Citigroup as a vice president in its Capital Markets division and as an analyst in the asset management group at Wilshire Associates. Ms. Kim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics from UCLA.
The California State Teachers’ Retirement System, with a portfolio valued at $184.8 billion as of May 31, 2014, is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world. CalSTRS administers a hybrid retirement system, consisting of traditional defined benefit, cash balance and voluntary defined contribution plans. CalSTRS also provides disability and survivor benefits. CalSTRS serves California's 868,000 public school educators and their families from the state’s 1,600 school districts, county offices of education and community college districts.
