Camellia Women’s Imaging Helping Diminish Breast Cancer Screening Anxiety

In studies of tomosynthesis in breast cancer screening published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the authors found a significant (41%) increase in the detection of invasive cancers with a simultaneous decrease in false positives.
“Camellia is one of the few places in Alabama to provide the Hologic 3D technology,” noted Dr. Tataria. “We have taken it even further and provide C-view mammography, which minimizes radiation to women undergoing 3D mammography. Additionally, we have the capability of performing a 3D biopsy.”
During her time in practice, Dr. Tataria has come to believe that there is a lot of unnecessary anxiety associated with the breast cancer screening process. She believes this is related to the waiting process associated with mammography, as well as a breakdown in communication, which is why at Camellia Women’s Imaging all women get their mammogram results the same day. Even those women undergoing routine screening have a face-to-face discussion with Dr. Tataria regarding their mammogram results and to answer any questions.
“We should not eliminate or decrease the use of a test (screening mammography) that decreases mortality from breast cancer by 30% because it causes anxiety,” stressed Dr. Tataria. “Instead, we should create a process that helps minimize this anxiety.”
Furthermore, if any additional views or ultrasound need to be performed at the time of the mammogram they are performed the same day at Camellia Women’s Imaging to minimize patient anxiety. Women that have breast biopsies are also able to have them in an outpatient comfortable setting.
