Camp Nuhop Provides Respite for Parents of Children with Special Needs; Kids Get to be Themselves, Disconnect from Media, Grow Emotionally & Build Self Esteem
Perrysville, OH (PRWEB) April 24, 2015 -- Since its inception in 1974, Camp Nuhop has been a dream come true for parents and children with a range of special needs. Camp Nuhop fosters emotional growth during its six summer sessions beginning in June and running though early – August. Nuhop gives kids the chance to feel no different than anybody else; to be active in the outdoors as well as build self-esteem and much needed friendships.
“Jordan is loving, handsome, athletic, appreciative, intuitive, intelligent, funny, active, hyperactive, impulsive, angry, aggressive, unparalleled challenge – with professional diagnoses of: OCD; ODD; ADHD; PTSD; RAD; and Asperger’s . . . There seemingly is no break from Jordan because you worry about him when you are gone and you worry about the sitter . . . AND THEN, thank God we were introduced to Camp Nuhop. It is a mini world full of people who understand our family and our struggles,” said Kelly and Mark Brick.
Camp Nuhop was built on this premise, to meet kids where they are, to accept them for who they are, to celebrate their uniqueness and to practice unconditional acceptance. Whether children engage in traditional one-week programs or National Trip Camps, Nuhop provides these kiddos with a safe & nurturing learning environment where every child can succeed.
“Attending Camp Nuhop is a wonderful opportunity for kids to build skills that count. Our structure of a 7 camper to 3 child ratio allows us to meet each child’s specific social or emotional need,” says Trevor Dunlap, Executive Director of Nuhop.
Camp Nuhop offers 16 unique and fun programs where kids have a change of pace and place. Based on a proactive approach of programming, kids who are often misunderstood are given the opportunity to be themselves, to explore their natural world, build relationships and be recognized for their contributions to the camp community. Often times this is the first time these kids have been seen for their abilities versus their disabilities. For many campers this is their first opportunity to make friendships that are so hard to come by in their school communities.
“When we found Camp Nuhop we found the mother ship. We do not need to explain ourselves, or our son. Camp Nuhop is filled with educators, staff, counselors that love unconditionally and cope with all the adjectives that we use to describe ourselves for we have become a family with special needs. We collectively need to curl up on a lap and get a hug that takes the world away for a bit and this is what Camp Nuhop does for us,” says Kelly and Mark Brick.
A leading nonprofit committed to creating playful learning experiences for youth, Nuhop had been a leader in providing summer camp opportunities for kids with special needs for over 40 years. Nuhop continues to provide kids and families opportunities to grow, to build self-efficacy and to find success.
