One day after a 2-4 loss to the Cardinals in Game 3—the first World Series game to end on an obstruction call—the Red Sox rebounded with a 4-2 victory over St. Louis. It was the first game World Series game to end in a pickoff.
Pitcher Jon Lester led Boston to a 3-1 victory in Game 5, giving up just one run through the seventh inning. Catcher David Ross broke seventh inning tie by scoring his first career RBI. David Ortiz also came through on offense, with a double and RBI.
With this win, the Red Sox are now one game away from claiming the World Series.
“On Opening Day, this is where you want to be, the position you want to be in,” Right fielder Shane Victorino said, according to Boston Herald. “I’m excited right now. I want to get back. I want to play tomorrow.”
With a one game edge, the Red Sox have two chances to win the series. History puts the Cardinals in a very precarious position. In the best-of-seven series, only one of 19 teams that lost a tie-breaking game 5 went on to win Games 6 and 7 on the road.
If the Red Sox win this game 6, it will be the first time Boston has clinched the World Series at home since 1918. That team, led by Babe Ruth, won at Fenway Park during World War I. It will also be Boston’s first World Series title since 2007.
Star rookie pitcher Michael Wacha of the Cardinals starts against John Lackey for the second time in the series.
