The Red Sox capitalized on errors to sweep the Cardinals 8-1 in Game 1, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Southpaw pitcher Jon Lester struck out eight, with a five-hit shutout into the seventh inning. Boston’s victory was their ninth consecutive World Series win since Game 7 of 1986.
The Cardinals proved they were still a force to be reckoned with in Game 2, taking advantage of Red Sox errors to come from behind in the seventh inning. With their 4-2 victory, the Cardinals not only took Game 2, they also put a stop to Boston’s Word Series winning streak.
“We had a wake-up call [tonight],” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, according to The Boston Globe. “That is not the kind of team we’ve been all season. And they’re frustrated. I’m sure embarrassed to a point. We get an opportunity to show the kind of baseball we played all season long, and it didn’t look anything like what we saw tonight.”
Yet the Cardinals hope hometown advantage will swing in its favor as the Series heads to St. Louis. The team won 54 games on its home field this summer. The team has pitched better, batted better and struck out less at home.
