Canadian Woman Loses Legs and Arm After Mild Dog Bite; Noted Dog Bite Lawyer Jeff Nadrich Responds
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- A Canadian woman was recently awoken from an induced coma after a mild dog bite caused her to go into septic shock, according to a report from CBC News. Christine Caron, 49, was reportedly playing with her dogs when one of them, a Shih Tzu mix, nipped her hand. She was soon hospitalized and doctors were forced to amputate both of her legs and one of her arms as the severe infection overtook her body. Esteemed dog bite attorney Jeff Nadrich recently commented on the case, arguing that dog bites can be much more serious than many people realize.
“Stories like this are absolutely heartbreaking,” says Nadrich, “and sadly, they're not unprecedented. Earlier this year, a Texas woman faced a very similar consequence. She was nipped by her dog, and then suffered an infection that caused her to lose her legs and fingers. The bacteria found in dog saliva has a powerful reaction in some people, and that's just one of the reasons why dog bites present such a serious issue.”
According to Nadrich, all dog bites should be treated as serious. “Even small dog bites can have major repercussions, and that's why they are taken so seriously in court. Dog owners are typically liable if their dog bites another person, because as we've seen in unfortunate cases like this, small doesn't necessarily mean insignificant. In this case, we have an unfortunate accident involving a woman and her beloved pet, but more often, victims are bitten by dogs that do not belong to them.”
As CBC reports, there have been approximately 200 cases like this in the past 25 years. Caron's infection is the result of Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium found in dog saliva. Caron's family is reportedly saving money for prosthetic limbs, in order to restore some of her mobility and independence. CBC reports that her right arm was spared, but she has lost all feeling and will require surgery in the hopes of restoring some of her movement. She is now advising other dog bite victims to seek medical attention immediately, and not to wait as she did.
