Cannabis Dispensary CEO Comments on Recent Debates in Washington, D.C., Denver and Elsewhere over "Pot Clubs," Says Such Establishments Would Send a Positive Message
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) February 10, 2016 -- The recreational use of marijuana has been legal in Colorado for over two years now, but cannabis enthusiasts in the state still face a lot of restrictions as to where they can smoke pot.
As Colorado’s website notes, “retail marijuana is intended for private, personal use” and that cannabis “may not be consumed openly or publicly.”
Given the momentum of the marijuana legalization movement, however, and growing demands that cannabis consumers have safe and legal public places where they can consume without fear of prosecution, lawmakers in Denver, Washington, D.C. and in other communities are now considering whether to allow the existence of private, social marijuana clubs in their jurisdictions; spaces where cannabis can be both sold and consumed on-site, without fear of prosecution.
Ryan Fox, owner and CEO of Denver’s Grass Station cannabis dispensaries, believes it’s just a matter of time before “pot clubs” are commonplace in many marijuana-friendly cities and states.
“Honestly I’m surprised we don’t have them yet,” he says. “But I expect public demand will lead the way and I’m encouraged by the debates now underway in Colorado, Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.”
Fox expects local governments will mostly likely follow the examples already in place with alcoholic beverage regulation, by setting up “wet” and “dry” towns and counties when it comes to cannabis clubs and consumption.
Another important factor in favor of clubs, he adds, are out-of-state tourists; who come to Colorado to enjoy cannabis but often end up baffled by the state’s marijuana consumption laws.
“Half of the sales in our dispensaries are made by people visiting Colorado,” he notes.
“Marijuana clubs would give people from out-of-town a safe and organized place where they can enjoy cannabis. At the same time those clubs would create additional tax revenue and a wide variety of jobs and employment opportunities all across Colorado,” he adds.
Having regulated businesses that are the cannabis sector’s equivalents of bars, night clubs and wine-tasting establishments, Fox says, would also provide a positive message about sensible marijuana consumption.
“Colorado has a good record of helping to establish a successful and legitimate cannabis industry,” Fox says. “If we as an industry can help remove this obstacle for our consumers, we’d be doing a lot of good both here in Colorado and for the entire cannabis sector.”
