Capsugel Helping Doctors for Nepal Improve Health Care in Nepal’s Most Remote Rural Areas
Morristown, N.J. (PRWEB) February 18, 2015 -- Capsugel today announced a two-year commitment to support Doctors for Nepal, a British charitable organization working to improve health care in rural Nepal by empowering impoverished local students to qualify and serve as doctors in isolated communities where they are greatly needed. Capsugel’s annual donations are helping Doctors for Nepal provide Nepalese students from poor backgrounds with scholarships, books and laptops that would otherwise be beyond their means, as well as support rural health care projects.
“We are happy to support such a wonderful organization and to play a small part in helping educate doctors who will have a tremendous impact on the health and well-being of people in some of the most remote places on earth,” said Guido Driesen, President and Chief Executive Officer, Capsugel.
After completing his or her studies and qualifying as a doctor, each student sponsored by Doctors for Nepal returns to one of Nepal’s many rural regions for a minimum of four years to provide desperately needed medical care. With fewer than one doctor per 100,000 people in many regions of Nepal, there is a critical need to train rural doctors. The organization is currently sponsoring five students and hopes to increase that number in the coming years.
“Capsugel’s generosity will help us not only change the lives of the medical students we are sponsoring, but also bring a higher standard of medical care to tens of thousands of patients who currently have to walk for days just to see a doctor,” said Dr. Kate Yarrow, founder and chair of Doctors for Nepal.
ABOUT DOCTORS FOR NEPAL
Doctors for Nepal (Registered Charity No. 1133441) was founded by Dr. Kate Yarrow after she returned from a Doctors without Borders mission to Nepal in 2006-2007. Dr. Yarrow was inspired by the desperate medical need of isolated rural communities – a situation compounded by harsh inaccessible mountains, political instability, and the economic challenges facing the country. The organization also supports health care projects in the far West of Nepal, facilitates rural and urban medical electives for UK students, and helps UK doctors undertake voluntary projects.
