Car finance experts Car Loan 4U comments on new eco friendly London black cabs
Macclesfield, Cheshire (PRWEB UK) 17 January 2014 -- The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced that in future, much tighter environmental regulations will be put in place where licensed taxi cab designs are concerned.
The announcement comes at the same time that three new London black cabs were revealed in the capital.
The new low-pollution models are being released by three different engineering companies. Metrocab, the British contribution, comes from Frazer-Nash. Karsan, a Turkish designer, has released a new prototype while London Taxi International is working on the newest generation of the classic 'black cab' TX4 model.
The technology behind the new taxis all rely on the use of drivetrains that are enhanced by range extenders. There are many other manufacturers who are rumored to have models in development as well, with Nissan potentially releasing a new and efficient London cab design by the end of the year.
The new regulations will require taxi designs to be able to run in a “zero emissions mode” as part of an effort to reduce the pollution levels in the capital. The Frazer-Nash Metrocab is currently closest to hitting the production lines, running on two 50kW, electric motors.
It also features a generator that works in conjunction with a 1-litre petrol engine. Running on pure battery power, the Metrocab is capable of achieving ranges as far as 75 kilometers on a single charge.

"Everyday across the capital, thousands of taxi drivers are working hard to transport people from A to B, but their black cabs leave a significant carbon footprint. With the introduction of the new zero emission cars, while it won't be instantaneous, we should hopefully see the smog in London clear up in the long-run."
