Car Show for the Arts and Arts Festival to Draw an Array of Classic Cars to Franklin County, VA
Franklin County, Va. (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- The annual Car Show for the Arts and Arts and Crafts Festival will be Saturday, Aug. 10 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Rocky Mount.
The annual event benefits the non-profit Rocky Mount Center for the Arts' youth after-school and summer arts program – Young at Art. Open to students in grades K-12, Young at Art Program features classes in drawing, acrylic painting, pottery, mosaic, fused glass, stained glass, weaving and jewelry-making.
“Everything that goes on at the center is educational and for the benefit of the community, either through lessons, exhibits or live demonstrations,” said Joan Rogers, director. “We are here to support the arts and to help our youth engage in making art within a mutually supportive and creative learning environment.”
The festival will feature a craft festival with artists and crafters from throughout Franklin County and the Roanoke Valley. There will be a judged art show for Franklin County youth, an adult art show and arts and crafts demonstrations. Also, live music and great food will be available.
A large array of classic cars is expected to compete for the unique, hand-blown "Flaming Tailpipe Trophy." The trophy is a signature piece by glass artist Carolyn Rogers of Hot Taffy Glass in downtown Rocky Mount. The flames are set in a polished stainless steel muffler on a cedar base, crafted by James Simms. The trophies are valued at more than $500 each.
Trophies will be awarded in the eight Best in Show categories, including: cars current to 1980; cars 1979 and older; trucks current to 1980; trucks 1979 and older; vehicle that traveled the furthest to compete; best motorcycle; and People’s Choice; and this year’s new category – most artistic vehicle. There will also be 160 other awards given to the top 160 entries.
This event is free and open to the public. A rain date has been set for Aug. 17.
