Cardiac Disease is the All-Important Topic Discussed at the Latest Meet the Experts Forum
Claremont, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2013 -- You might call heart disease an equal opportunity health danger.
“Heart disease is the number one cause of death in America for men and women,” said Dr. Timothy Dauwalder, Medical Director, VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California. Dr. Dauwalder was the expert speaker at the latest “Meet the Experts” series open forum whose topic was Cardiac Disease. Dr. Dauwalder says VNA’s popular “Meet the Experts” is a series that he hopes “will go on indefinitely.” The talks are structured lectures, yet very open to conversation, he says. “We just sit and talk.” He noted that on the heart disease topic, there was important and captivating conversation with those who suffer from or are touched by heart disease.
In this video, Dr. Dauwalder lists some of what he talked about at the forum:
- Basic physiology of the heart and vessels.
- Basic names/terms, like Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), and other vascular diseases, so people won’t be so intimidated and they can go talk to their doctor about what might be needed for them.
- What it means in the broad sense to have hypertension, high blood pressure.
- Family history, and how to take medicines properly.
- If you have certain symptoms how important it is to see your doctor.
- Heart disease is an often silent disease.
Dr. Dauwalder wants the patient to talk with their doctor specifically about heart disease and how specifically it relates to them and communicate symptoms that they might otherwise have ignored to help their doctor to organize care for them.
With the “Meet the Experts” series, each hosted by different experts from VNA or other community resources, Dr. Dauwalder says: “I support you in being educated, being an advocate for your own health and having a partner in your doctor.”
MEET THE EXPERTS SERIES
"Meet the Experts" provides community access to specialists in the care of patients with chronic, advanced or terminal diseases who need hospice or home care support. Many people with advanced diseases are able to remain for quite some time on their own outside of a formal care setting. Often family members provide the first line of support in this situation. Community education connects those who want to know a complete set of care options with experts who study and provide that care and stay in tune with the latest developments in advanced disease options. Some of the videos will contain not only the public presentations but follow-up one-on-one interviews.
