Carencro Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony Honors Hometown Heroes
Carencro, LA (PRWEB) November 13, 2014 -- On Veteran's Day, November 11, 2014, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the new Carencro Veterans Memorial and to honor the men and women of the community who serve or have served the country, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The dedication ceremony, held at the recently completed Memorial, located in front of City Hall, began with the Presentation of Colors by the Lafayette Fire Department, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Carroll E. Guilbeaux, a WWII Veteran. Next, Rena Boudreaux, a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, sang the National Anthem and Father Mark LeDoux of St. Peter Catholic Church delivered the invocation.
Mayor Glenn Brasseaux's first order of business was to give thanks to the men and women of the armed forces who fought and continue to fight for freedom. With appreciation, not only to the Veterans who served, but to the community who supported the project, Mayor Glenn Brasseaux said. “The memorial has created a feeling that’s indescribable.” The Mayor then introduced Architect Lynn Guidry, who told the audience the story of how the Memorial came to be. Guidry described the process for determining the location and style of the Memorial and how "listening" to the surroundings and the elements of the project led to the selection of location and creation of the Memorial.
A recognition of all veterans in attendance was led by Commander Wilbert Lacombe, representing the Carencro War Veteran's Association. As each branch of the military was called out and Veterans accepted applause from the crowd. Next, it was time to remember the Veterans Killed or Missing in Action. These soldiers, whose names are engraved on the monuments at the Memorial, were read aloud by Commander Lacombe. Those KIA and MIA Veterans honored are: Percy Allemand - Army/Korea, Euclide J. Savoy, Jr. - Army/Korea, Curley Babineaux - Army/WWII, Andrew Benoit - Army/Korea, A.B. John Breaux - Navy/WWII, Rene Breaux - Army/WWII, Edgar J. Guilbeau - Army/WWII, Fr. J. Verbis LaFleur - Army/WWII, Cyril J.B. Landry - Army/WWII, Numa E. Martin - Army/WWII, Nelson John Menard - USMC/Korea, Antoine J. Miller - Army/WWII, Nicholas Olivier - Army/Iraq, Charles R. Parkerson - Air Force/Korea, L.J. Toussaint Richard - Army/WWII, Weston Roger - Army/WWII, and Ewell J. Sonnier - Army/WWII. Once the names of the soldiers were read, Bugler Joshua Stutes played Taps followed by recognition of donors and the official ribbon cutting. The closing prayer was delivered by Pastor Nick Peters of the First Baptist Church of Carencro. In addition to the granite "soldiers" bearing the names of KIA and MIA Veterans, bricks that make up the base of the Memorial are engraved with the names of local Veterans who have served in the military.
