CareOne Launches Million Dollar Drive to Bring Aid and Supplies to Victims of Hurricane Irma with Focus on the Elderly Upended by Storm and its Aftermath
Fort Lee, NJ (PRWEB) September 18, 2017 -- While Floridians confront the aftermath of one of the worst storms in the state’s history, CareOne, a New jersey based company, has launched an aid effort focused on the elderly population that was less able to evacuate or respond to Hurricane Irma as it battered the state over two days and left thousands homeless and displaced.
“The elderly are often hidden from view in our society, but they remain in danger even after the storm has passed,” said Elizabeth Strauss, Executive Vice President of CareOne and Special Projects Director for the company’s charitable giving. “The outpouring of generosity from our employees and neighbors has been so gratifying and we are proud to be able to make even a little bit of difference to comfort people in Florida.”
CareOne raised and distributed over $1 million in funds for victims of Hurricane Sandy, the 2012 storm that battered the Eastern Seaboard, particularly focused on New Jersey where many of the company’s employees were wiped out. “We learned from Hurricane Sandy that we needed to be there for our employees and neighbors,” said Ms. Strauss. “We learned from Hurricane Irma that even though those victimized by this storm are largely unknown to us personally, they are still people who need us.”
Florida has the highest percentage of residents 65 and older, many living in subsidized housing, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Florida is home to nearly 5.2 million seniors age 60 and older and approximately one in four of them suffer some physical impairment, according to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
CareOne has set up four donation centers and is inviting the public to support the relief effort by dropping off donations to trucks stationed at CareOne at Randolph, CareOne at Wilmington, CareOne at Millbury and Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Donations are also accepted at any CareOne location in Massachusetts. Visit ma.care-one.com for the full list of locations.
CareOne has set a goal of $1 million in donated items and contributions to the charitable organizations that are able to offer additional support to those affected by the hurricane.
CareOne is sending sanitation and general cleaning items, children’s and adult diapers, toiletries, batteries, formula, adult and children’s clothing and jackets, non-perishable food items and blankets to the residents of Florida. Monetary donations can be made out to Best Friends Animal Society, a nationwide animal rescue and advocacy organization that is working tirelessly to rescue animals that have been left homeless as a results of the devastation in Florida and Texas.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates there were more than 1.6 million people who were at least 75 years old in Florida in 2015, and it considers almost half of them disabled. This includes 221,000 who have trouble concentrating, remembering things or making decisions.
