Caring for Others “Is” Her Fulltime Job; Linda Phyllis Ratzthompson Releases New Book

In “Generational Cooking: A Story About Life and Becoming a Caregiver,” Ratzthompson describes how she began caring for her mother’s parents as she worked through a failing business, divorce and health issues. She turned to helping others as a way of coping. She compares caregiving to cooking, as multiple people and personalities must blend together at just the right time and with the right ingredients. Caregivers do, in fact, prepare meals for their charges, creating memories as they dine together. The book serves as a guide for one woman’s journey through life as she cares for loved ones, drawing on strength she never knew she had with the support of her husband, family members and caring organizations.
The role of caregiver can be misunderstood but is as vital as ever. As Ratzthompson writes, “No amount of money, wealth, stature, or power can buy this commitment, this time, and these memories. This is a sometimes-unbearable task made possible by the support of spouses, friends, family, and organizations who understand.”
Author Linda Phyllis Ratzthompson has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and worked for a title underwriter representing northeast Florida. The Jacksonville native was a contractor with her own firm in St. Augustine, building and remodeling more than 100 homes. She served as a member of the Planning and Zoning Board in St. Augustine Beach and was elected as a commissioner. She was an active volunteer for charity and has cared for her grandparents, mother-in-law and now her parents. Ratzthompson, her husband and her parents live in Melrose.
