Carlos J. Reyes, Esq. Featured as Speaker at The 2013 Hispanic Leaders Summit
Miramar, FL (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- The Hispanic Leaders Summit, held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, offered prominent Hispanic Leaders a great opportunity to stay current with many of the issues that have a direct impact on the Hispanic community. Among the speakers were the Co-Chairpersons Lieutenant Rafael Lopez of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and Richard Lozada, Director of Outreach, Sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez, South Florida Campus and Keynote Speaker Jose Izquierdo, Chairperson, Cuban Americans for Better Florida (the “CABF”). Topics also included were Immigration Reform by J. David Pena, Attorney at Law, Fowler Rodriguez Law Firm and Hispanic Economic Impact in South Florida by Dr. Robert Cruz, Chief Economist, Miami Dade County.
In his presentation of the redistricting outcome in Broward County, Attorney Carlos Reyes reflected on how minority / Hispanic friendly maps were initially submitted to the County for the redistricting effort. That after initial public hearing, the county commission chose a map that split the Hispanic population in half. As a consequence, the CABF joined a Federal lawsuit that had been filed on behalf of Broward’s African American community who had similarly felt the adopted map slighted the community. Reyes said, “By joining the Broward Citizens for Fair Districts 2012 federal redistricting lawsuit, the CABF served to provide the Hispanic Community with a ‘voice’ in the Broward County redistricting and litigation process. While we first met with commissioners to educate and promote our map submission – an education in the process all onto itself - the lawsuit demonstrated we would, and will, follow through using “the law” to ensure that Broward’s growing Hispanic voice has a seat at the table.”
