Carstens’ John Pierson Participates In White House Business Council Roundtable

Executives such as Pierson met with senior Administration officials to discuss how international trade policy affects their businesses. Business leaders from cities across the country, including Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland, and San Antonio, participated in the event. Officials included Deputy Secretary of Commerce Bruce Andrews, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Robert Holleyman and Ex-Im Bank Chairman Fred Hochberg.
At the roundtable organized by the White House Business Council and Business Forward, the discussion focused on how international trade policy can help more American companies reach more international markets across industries.
Trade’s contribution to the U.S. economy has grown consistently, and opportunities associated with trade continue to expand. This past year, U.S. exports supported a record 11.7 million jobs. More than 95 percent of the world’s consumers live outside the United States, representing more than 80 percent of global GDP.
The discussion focused on two significant trade agreements that the Administration is currently negotiating: the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) with countries in the Asia-Pacific region and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP) with members of the European Union.
The group also spoke about the importance of international trade to the travel and tourism industry.
This event is one in a series of White House briefings that bring business leaders from across the country to Washington to discuss international trade policy with Administration officials.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 300,000 U.S. companies export their goods to international markets. Businesses that do export grow faster and are 8 percent less likely to declare bankruptcy than those that do not export.
