The following is a brief sample of those tips (the entire list of which can be found on his new business update titled 24 Twitter Tips for Small Businesses.

1. One of the most important ways to get a company profiled on the social networking site is to build a strong profile. Consultants and advisors should upload a photograph; companies should opt for their brand logo.

2. Describing a business accurately within the allotted 160 characters isn’t easy, admits the Australian business mentor. However, it should always contain keywords relevant to the company.

3. It’s essential that companies provide their physical location in their profile, as well as their web URL. They should also ensure their Twitter profile can be viewed on a number of electronic devices ie Smartphones. Twitter can advise on how to do this.

4. Content should, of course, be interesting, varied and mixed ie it should include YouTube videos, infographics and photos as well as good content.

5. It’s a good idea to share events for your industry sector, books of interest, unique insights and, of course, to answer any questions asked. Sharing articles and other Twitter feeds is also very good practice.

6. Hashtags are an excellent way for companies to keep up to date with their sector, says company coach Gollan, who is personally a big advocate of them.

7. Companies should follow customers, prospects and other relevant industries and companies within their sector.

8. It’s always a good idea for companies and individuals to follow their competitors’ conversations and retweets if possible.

9. Companies can always search for relevant lists and customers by occupation via the social media tool Listorious

10. Companies should always aim to promote their Twitter account on as many social media channels as possible, as well as their own website, blog and company card.

11. The big brands know what they’re doing. It’s an idea for companies to follow them and try to interpret what they’re doing right. Companies can always find role models from sights such as Mashable.

12. Tweetlevel provides plenty of useful information on how companies can choose whether one particular hashtag is better than another and therefore boost their own Twitter presence. It will also spell out how much actual influence a Twitter user has.

13. Hubspot’s Tweet Grader can give companies an idea of how their competitors are doing on the social media channel. As a result they can customize their own tweets to those they know work and will reap results.

14. Sites such as SimilarSiteSearch allow companies to look for alternative web sites to Twitter and see what influence their competitors have there.Business expert Gollan also advises that, at the same time, companies always check their Twitter reach metrics to review the influence their own tweets are having.
