Castlewood at The Highlands to Celebrate National Eating Disorder Awareness Week with Special Events
Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) February 15, 2016 -- Though eating disorders are common, they also remain clouded by misinformation and shrouded in stigma. National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is an attempt to change that. This year, the week-long event will be held from February 21 through February 27. Castlewood at The Highlands, a Birmingham-based treatment center focusing on eating disorder recovery, will celebrate the week with a number of special collaborations and panel discussions.
To help facilitate these awareness-boosting, informative events, Castlewood will be teaming with Oliver-Pyatt Treatment Center and the Re*Vive Program. These collaborations will yield events at Samford University, the University of Montevallo, and Mountain Brook High School. The goal of each event: To raise awareness about the dangers of eating disorders while also encouraging hope and recovery.
“National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is really important to us at The Highlands because ultimately it is our wish to live in a world without eating disorders,” comments Clinical Director Nicole Siegfried, from Castlewood. “National Eating Disorder Awareness Week raises awareness so that we can more effectively treat eating disorders and prevent them. Events such as those we are sponsoring this year teach people of all ages and genders that food is neither good nor bad and our bodies are beautiful the way they are.”
Susan Pirkle, from Re*Vive, is similarly hopeful. “The Re*Vive Program loves to collaborate with other clinicians and treatment facilities in an effort to join forces to provide a united front on the importance of treating life threatening eating disorders,” she notes. “Since we know the serious health implications that exist, it would be irresponsible to our community to not speak out! Our hope is by speaking truth about eating disorders that all individuals will be more aware of serious signs and symptoms so they will be less likely of falling victim to such a disorder. Throughout the week we will strive to equip individuals with resources and empower all generations to embrace their unique self so that our community can be changed and ultimately impact our culture.”
At the first of these events—to be held on February 23, at Samford—there will be photo booths, airbrush tattoos, games, and more—plus a panel discussion featuring representatives from each of the three sponsoring treatment facilities.
A similar event will be held on February 24 at the University of Montevallo, again featuring a mixture of fun and informational activities throughout the day, culminating in a panel discussion. On February 25, a special Chick-fil-A breakfast will be held at Mountain View High, including a brief presentation about the dangers of eating disorders.
