Celebrate Court Days in Franklin County on Saturday, June 13
Franklin County, Va. (PRWEB) April 28, 2015 -- Take a step back in time for Court Days in Uptown and Downtown Rocky Mount, Saturday, June 13 from 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Organized by Community Partnership, the event celebrates heritage and culture of the community. The Franklin County Historical Society will tell the story of official court proceedings from the late 1700s through the present and tell many of the local community traditions that surrounded it in Franklin County. Court Days is one of several events happening in Franklin County during The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming, June 12-20.
“It has been said by many that “Court Day” was still a day people poured into Rocky Mount though the day was no longer legally significant,” said Event Volunteer Donna Wray. “It is an honor to revive a cultural event that is such a big part of our heritage.”
Central to the event will be the opening ceremony on the front lawn of the Franklin County Historical Courthouse and includes a short skit written by Rex Stephenson based on an actual 1800s trial.
Guided tours to select historic sites within Uptown and Downtown, with stories of people connected to them, will be another focus for the event. In addition, activities include multiple venues of live music, exhibits, old-time youth games at Mary Elizabeth Park, Farm-to-Fork experiences and a jam session at the Farmers’ Market, an exhibit at the Franklin County Historical Society Museum, “Junk in the Trunk” yard sale, and more.
Court Day will encourage participants to enjoy savory homemade cuisine at local restaurants and outdoor vendors, and to shop for unique finds among a variety of shops and local artisan vendors.
“Residents are really excited about “Court Day” as it brings back childhood memories and the younger people want to be a part of it,” said Carolyn Johnson, President of Community Partnership. “It’s quite the buzz in town today!”
Admission is free and open to the public. The Guided historic tours will be offered for $10 per ticket. For more information, visit http://www.historicrockymount.com or call 540-814-0694 or 540-420-6963.
