Cemetery.us.org Launching Fight Against Funeral Home Scam Artists
SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) July 23, 2013 -- Cemetery.us.org is launching an information campaign to help stop funeral homes from running a scam on people when they are at their most vulnerable, the company said yesterday.
“It truly disgusts us that some people will try to run a scam on someone when their loved one has just died,” a Cemetery.us.org spokesman said. “So we decided to investigate how funeral home scams work, and educate our customers about them.”
The most common funeral home scam, the Cemetery.us.org spokesman said, is getting people to pay more money than they can afford, either for the casket itself or for extras that don't deliver.
“Some of these scam artists will tell people that an expensive device will keep out water and preserve the remains forever,” he said. “In reality, these devices can cause caskets to explode when they are underground.”
Another scam, the Cemetery.us.org spokesman said, is to claim to be giving people a discount on a casket, and then tack the money onto the funeral director's bill instead.
“These scams are so common, it is clear to us we have to step in and do something,” he said. “So we are being proactive.”
The information is being sent directly to their customers, he said. The anti-scam advice will also be available on their social media outlets and their blog, CemeteryBlog.us.org, he said.
“We aren't charging anything for this information,” the Cemetery.us.org spokesman said. “We just don't want our customers to become scam victims.”
