Shreveport, LA (PRWEB) July 25, 2014 -- This week Gregory Warren ’98 began his tenure at North America’s largest opera company, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
His contract will allow him to sing in the chorus as well as supporting roles. Warren acknowledges this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
His success, however, did not come without its challenges. Towards the end of his time at Centenary, Warren was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and had to undergo major treatment. Due to his health, Warren was not able to perform his senior recital until after his first year as a graduate student.
Warren graduated from Centenary with a degree in vocal performance and attributes much of his success to the Hurley School of Music program.
“One of the most important things of my career was finding the right voice teacher at such a crucial age when beginning college,” said Warren. “I studied with Dr. Gale Odom for my entire time at Centenary, and she was the one responsible for helping me have one of the most stable foundations in my technique. This allowed me to have continued success throughout my career.”
Warren was an active member of the Centenary Choir and also learned operatic skills from former Centenary professor, Dr. Horace English.
“I was able to perform all the time throughout my college career,” said Warren. “This is one of the most important things one could ask for as a student; the chance to simply perform.”
After singing for eight years in Europe, Warren has welcomed the change of coming back to the States and is thrilled about the opportunity.
“To be able to pursue my passion as a career, and get paid for it, is a dream come true,” said Warren. “This position is the closest thing to a guaranteed living in the business.”
The Metropolitan Opera produces 200 performances each season, with an audience of about 800,000 people and several million who watch performances at the cinema. The Metropolitan Opera Company has an annual budget of $327 million and employs 3,400 people.
