CENTER Announces 20th Annual International Photography Awards & Grants Winners
Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) April 20, 2015 -- CENTER has announced its 2015 Awards & Grants winners, naming Inés Dümig of Germany and Justin Kimball of the United States as recipients of $5,000 grants for the advancement of their documentary photography projects.
Now in its 20th year, CENTER Awards & Grants attract entries from artists working in 40+ countries. The process is highly competitive, with jurors from TIME magazine, CNN, the National Gallery of Art, London’s National Portrait Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland, and Italy’s Photolux Festival identifying outstanding documentary and fine art work.
The Awards & Grants are announced in the weeks preceding CENTER’s Review Santa Fe, one of the world’s premier photography events. This year Review Santa Fe takes place June 11-14 in downtown Santa Fe, NM. The winning work will be exhibited at Santa Fe’s Center for Contemporary Arts and the winners will give public presentations of the projects throughout the weekend.
Dümig and Kimball won grants for documentary work focusing on the lives of the forgotten and invisible. Dümig’s documentary project, “Apart Together,” documents the fragmented existence of Sahra, a Somali refugee living in Munich. The work is now being featured on CNN as a direct result of the grant. Kimball’s “Brick and Mortar” focuses on formerly thriving coal, steel, paper and farming communities along the East Coast of the US.
The Choice Awards recognize outstanding photography in three categories: Curator’s Choice, Editor’s Choice, and Director’s Choice. Winners receive recognition and career advancement via exhibition, publication, portfolio reviews and more.
"I found that the strongest submissions included not only the most compelling and effective photographs, but also clearly articulated statements of intent,” said Project Development Grant Juror Sarah Greenough, curator with the National Gallery of Art. “I chose the work that … was both visually sophisticated and conceptually strong, with pictures that burned themselves into my memory."
