Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University Named “Great Friend to Kids”

ARLINGTON, Va. (PRWEB) April 19, 2018 -- The Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) has selected the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University as the recipient of the 2018 ACM Great Friend to Kids Award. Al Race, Deputy Director and Chief Knowledge Officer, will accept the award on behalf of the Center on May 18th, during ACM’s InterActivity 2018 conference in Raleigh, NC.

“For more than a decade, the Center on the Developing Child has made outstanding contributions toward closing the gap between what we know and what we do to improve the lives of children facing adversity,” said ACM Executive Director Laura Huerta Migus. “The Center’s groundbreaking research in the areas of toxic stress, brain architecture, executive function, and resilience informs the practice of children’s museums in pursuing our shared vision of creating a world that honors all children.”

Since 1991, the ACM Great Friends to Kids Award has been presented annually at InterActivity and honors those who have made significant contributions to strengthen education and advance the interests of children. Past recipients include The Junior League, Geoffrey Canada, and Fred Rogers.

“It’s especially gratifying to receive this recognition from ACM because of the important work children’s museums do every day—creating ideas and activities that are fun and engaging, yet based on a scientific understanding of child development,” said Al Race. “All children need opportunities to explore, learn, and play in a safe, supportive environment, and children’s museums consistently provide that in communities around the world.”

Founded in 2006, The Center on the Developing Child’s mission is to drive science-based innovation that achieves breakthrough outcomes for children facing adversity. The Center catalyzes local, national, and international innovation in policy and practice focused on children and families, working with a broad network of partners to seek transformational impacts on lifelong learning, behavior, and physical and mental health.

Hosted by Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh from May 15-18, the theme for InterActivity 2018 is Open Source Play, Sharing the Creative Code. The annual conference convenes hundreds of children’s museum leaders, staff, and stakeholders to share knowledge and advocate for the children’s museum field.
