Cerebrum Health Centers & WFAA Investigates the Realities of Football on Childrens' Brains
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) November 23, 2016 -- WFAA reporter David Schechter consulted Dallas experts on the effect football can have on our children’s brains. In other words, the repercussions of concussions.
In his search, Schechter spoke with specialists from Dallas-based leading brain health rehabilitation facility Cerebrum Health who provided insight on the seriousness of brain injuries.
“We are proud to help spread awareness on how to prevent and treat brain injury,” said Jimmy Mathews, president and COO of Cerebrum Health Centers. “The research David conducted involved true case studies, which we were able to be a part of.”
High school football accounts for 47 percent of all reported sports concussions, Schechter said in his report. Cerebrum’s Dr. Brandon Brock has seen this injury time and again and was able to exhibit some of his evaluation methods for WFAA.
“I test balance because the brain sends messages, allowing us to perform motor skills,” Dr. Brock said. “If something’s up with movement, then something’s up with the communication process between the brain and body.”
The story highlighted the importance of high-tech diagnostic treatment and its role in preventing and treating repeated-trauma-related injuries. Dr. Brock explained that constant inflammation of brain cells can lead to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative brain disease found in athletes caused by repeated blows to the head.
“We have dedicated our careers to working not only with athletes, but with anyone, to avoid such traumatizing brain injuries,” Mathews said. “Our research is an ongoing mission, and one that others are fortunately noticing. The awareness will lead to prevention, but also, for those who are suffering, we can increase their quality of life.”
