Certified Wound Care Nurse Introduced at John Scott House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Massachusetts

John Scott House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, a Welch Healthcare and Retirement Group skilled nursing center in Massachusetts, recently announced the certification of Assistant Director of Nursing Services Kim Coneeny, RN, WCC, as a certified Wound Care Nurse. Wound management has become more complex and intricate, creating an opportunity for long-term care nurses to specialize and focus on assessment, treatment and prevention of infection. The Wound Care Certification Examination is sponsored by the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy (NAWCO).
“There is an increasing need for post-surgical and complex wound care outside of a hospital setting,” says Kristen Reilly McHugh, administrator of John Scott House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. According to Reilly McHugh the addition of an on-site specialized wound care certified nurse is another example of John Scott House’s ongoing commitment to providing its residents access to the highest standard of care.
Experts stress that as people age skin tends to become thinner and loses some of the moisture and tissue support that once made it strong, making them more susceptible to frequent skin tears and breaks. For individuals also impacted by chronic illness or a recent surgery, specialized wound care may be necessary to heal and prevent complications of existing wounds as well as prevent the formation of new wounds.
