According to the report, speeding as a primary factor in fatal teen driver accidents increased from 30 percent in 2000 to 33 percent in 2011. Total teen-driver car accident fatalities have gone down over the same period.
Susan Ferguson, the author of the report, said speeding is more prevalent among male teenagers, at night, and in the presence of other teen passengers.
This suggests that some teens may speed because they give in to peer pressure or want to “show off,” Salvi said.
“Nobody should lose a loved one simply because a driver decided to see how fast their car could go and wound up causing an accident,” said the attorney.
