History of Children’s Aid and Family Services
Founded in 1899 by volunteers to help find families for orphaned children, Children’s Aid and Family Services’ mission is to preserve, protect, and when needed, provide families. Dr. Robert Jones is only the fourth CEO in the agency’s history. In his nearly 30 years serving as CEO, he led the merger of Children’s Aid and Adoption Society and Family Counseling Services of Ridgewood in 1995, which created Children’s Aid and Family Services – a specialized children’s treatment agency. The children the agency serves generally have backgrounds of severe trauma, neglect, medical issues and multiple foster care placements.
During Dr. Jones’s tenure, the agency has expanded to include services for people with developmental disabilities, The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources and shelter and support for teenage mothers. He has worked tirelessly to engage the community in the agency’s mission, creating a volunteer program that has grown to over 1,000 people.
A nationally recognized leader in the human services field, Dr. Jones has published numerous articles, presented at conferences throughout the U.S., and been the recipient of many awards in recognition of his work. These include the Samuel Gerson Nordlinger Child Welfare Leadership Award from the Alliance for Strong Families & Communities, the Walter Head Foundation Award for Leadership in Program Innovation and Development from Rotary International, District 7490, and the Salute to Volunteerism Award from the Bergen-Hudson Chapter of the American Red Cross. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Administration from Rutgers University and is an adjunct professor of Nonprofit Administration at the University of Notre Dame.
Robert B. Jones Vision Fund
In recognition of Dr. Jones’ long and distinguished service to Children’s Aid and Family Services, the Board of Trustees has announced the creation of the Robert B. Jones Vision Fund to develop and sustain high quality, innovative services and continue his leadership legacy. A special recognition event for Dr. Jones is also to be held on February 7. Full details of this event are available on the agency’s website at http://www.cafsnj.org.
“It has been a privilege to lead this organization and work with so many people in the community to help some of our most vulnerable children and families,” says Dr. Jones. “I have known Jerry Binney for many years and am confident he will be an exceptional leader who continues to strengthen the services the agency offers. I wish Jerry, the Board of Trustees, the staff and the many volunteers at Children’s Aid and Family Services all of the best.”
