Choose Your Own Adventure “By Balloon to the Sahara” Reissued April 15th

The book has long been heralded as a fan favorite and international bestseller, with over 5 million copies in print in 25 languages since its original publication in 1979.
“By Balloon to the Sahara” was concocted during the popular series’ earliest days, as part of the first contract for Choose Your Own Adventure between R. A. Montgomery and Bantam Books. When Bantam agreed to publish the series based on Montgomery’s “Journey Under the Sea,” they wanted additional titles written quickly for the new series’ roll-out. Montgomery enlisted the help of writers he knew, including fellow Vermont author Douglas Terman. “By Balloon to the Sahara” was the result.
“The reissue of this title is very important to Chooseco,” says Publisher Shannon Gilligan. “We have heard from fans for years that Doug’s title is their favorite book and they want to see it restored to print. “By Balloon to the Sahara,” was published as the third book in the original series, and it proved to be a special Choose Your Own Adventure soup of elements that would become cemented in fans’ memories: kooky scientists in secret underground labs, epic high-stakes choices at land and sea, untrustworthy strangers with hidden agendas, and even alien beings, all seen from the perspective of “you,” and your three friends: two human and one canine.
“Doug organized his writing for this book by placing notecards of ideas on the wall and constantly rearranging them to make the stories work together,” recalls Terman’s widow, Seddon Johnson. “I know he would love one change to the book that has been made via the artwork—the addition of an Airedale terrier. They were his favorites.”

About D. Terman
D. Terman was educated at Cornell and Columbia Universities, then flew in Air Force night interceptor and bomber squadrons, and went on to become a missile launch crew commander. In 1963 he sailed his schooner to the West Indies, and for the next twelve years cruised extensively in European and Caribbean waters. Mr. Terman moved to the Vermont in the mid-70s and commenced writing fiction full time. He made this early contribution to the Choose Your Own Adventure series just as his career writing geo-political thrillers took off. His adult best sellers included First Strike, Free Flight, Shell Game, Cormorant, and several others. He passed away in 1999.
