Christians for Biblical Equality and Christians for Biblical Equality–South Africa to host conference in Johannesburg, South Africa
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) September 30, 2015 -- Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) will join its partner organization Christians for Biblical Equality–South Africa (CBESA) to host a conference themed “Truth be Told” in Johannesburg, South Africa. “Truth be Told” will be held September 16–17, 2016 at Rhema Bible Church in Johannesburg, South Africa and its focus will be gender-based violence.
“South Africa has the highest rate of gender-based violence in the world,” said CBE’s president, Dr. Mimi Haddad. “Too often, the church has encouraged patriarchal teachings and interpretations of the Bible. These, in turn, justify a view of women that allows for gender-based violence. CBE exists to share the perspective that the Bible opposes patriarchy and instead endorses full equality and shared leadership among men and women. Getting this right is critical to the church and society as a whole.”
Xana McCauley, CBESA leader and pastor at Rhema Bible Church, echoed this sentiment, saying that the church must directly confront the root causes of gender-based violence: “We have the right laws in place, but society is patriarchal. Government and business are ahead of the church. Religious leaders are social gatekeepers and therefore have enormous influence.”
Confirmed speakers include CBE’s president, Dr. Mimi Haddad; Maclean Dlodlo, senior advisor for faith and gender in development with World Vision International; and Keketso Maema, the CEO of South Africa’s Commission for Gender Equality.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based ministry and service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online bookstore and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
