Christians for Biblical Equality Completes Burmese and Tanzanian Swahili Translations of Historic Statement
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) December 28, 2015 -- Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) is pleased to announce the completion of a Burmese translation of its statement, “Men, Women and Biblical Equality.” The statement was formulated by CBE founders Gilbert Bilezikian, W. Ward Gasque, Stanley N. Gundry, Gretchen Gaebelein Hull, Catherine Clark Kroeger, Jo Anne Lyon, and Roger Nicole in 1989 and lays out the biblical rational for the full equality of men and women in the church and family. This statement was the first of its kind in the evangelical academy, and was endorsed by over 100 leading evangelical scholars and leaders, including F.F. Bruce, Bill Hybels, Gordon Fee, and more.
“Men, Women and Biblical Equality, or simply ‘CBE’s Statement’ as we call it within the organization, is one of our core documents,” said CBE president, Dr. Mimi Haddad. “Short but thorough, it summarizes the biblical position that CBE exists to advance. As such, it serves as an excellent introduction to biblical gender equality and we seek to make it available in as many languages as possible. Thousands have used CBE’s Statement to search the Scripture for its teachings on gender.”
Rachel Asproth, CBE’s communications associate, who oversaw the projects, explained that the translations reflect CBE’s local and global work. “CBE is based in Minnesota, home to about 7,000 Burmese speakers, most of them Karen refugees. Many are Christians who are heavily involved in local churches, and we are committed to sharing the good news of biblical gender equality with these neighbors. At the same time, we are also committed to global outreach, and the Tanzanian Swahili translation will help our partners in Tanzania lay the groundwork for future work following our 2016 conference in South Africa.”
To date, CBE has completed 36 translations of “Men, Women and Biblical Equality” and has one more—Tamil—in the final proofreading stage. All of CBE’s translations of the statement are available for download at no cost on CBE’s website.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based ministry and service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online bookstore and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
