Christians for Biblical Equality to Conduct Training with 100 Global Leaders
(PRWEB) May 27, 2016 -- On September 15, 2016, Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) will conduct a training with 100 leaders from around the world. The training, part of CBE’s 2016 conference “Truth be Told: Speaking Out Against Gender Based Violence” is built around the question “Is gender equality a biblical ideal?”
A combination of presentations and small group conversation, the workshop will explore what the Old and New Testaments have to say about women, will review and highlight the impact of women and their treatment throughout Christian history, and will explore how particular interpretations of the Bible continue to elevate men over women. The training will also consider how to advocate for gender equality across cultural divides.
The training is based on a series of webinars originally developed by CBE and World Vision, according to CBE’s president, Dr. Mimi Haddad, who sees such trainings as critical. According to Haddad, “NGO leaders and pastors have come to recognize that many of the challenges they work to address, such as poverty, AIDS, and violence cannot be addressed until women and men are equally valued are share leadership. This is an ideal found in Scripture, but in many societies, from the United States to South Africa to Cambodia, entrenched patriarchy is justified by particular interpretations of the Bible. Flawed interpretations must be corrected not simply because they distort Scripture’s fundamental message, but also because they have devastating consequences on women, men, children, and communities. Only by training leaders to recognize and embrace the truth that gender equality is a biblical ideal, can we move forward.”
Speakers at the training include Dr. Mimi Haddad; Xana McCauley, a pastor at Rhema Bible Church in Johannesburg, South Africa and head of CBE’s partner and conference co-host, CBE-South Africa; Ethel Pittaway, an Anglican priest in Port Elizabeth, South Africa; and Esme Bowers, who is the International Secretary for the Lausanne movement and serves as the chair of African Women in Missions Network, which trains women in Africa in community development.
The training will be held in the RAC building on the campus of Rhema Bible Church-North, September 15, 2016.
