Christians for Biblical Equality to Participate in Lecture Series in Kenya
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) April 27, 2015 -- This May, Dr. Mimi Haddad, president of Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) will travel to Kenya to participate in a public lecture series examining religious and cultural issues surrounding the dowry system. Dr. Haddad’s lecture, titled “Are Christian Relationships Transactional” will explore God’s relationship with humanity and use this as a model for all relationships.
The lecture series, entitled “Dowry Payment for Marriage as a Religious and Cultural Practice in Africa—Its Positive and Negative Impact on Women and Society” will be held on May 8, 2015 at St. Michael’s and All Angels Cathedral in Bondo, Kenya. The event is hosted by the Ekklesia Foundation for Gender Education (EFOGE), the Anglican Diocese of Bondo, and the Bishop Okullu College of Theology.
“Since its founding,” said Haddad, “EFOGE has been making the world a better place for women and girls (and men and boys) by presenting the Bible’s challenge to patriarchy. Patriarchy is deeply embedded in every culture, whether in Kenya or the United States, but its manifestations can be different. Thus it is local organizations like EFOGE that will lead Christians around the world to overcome patriarchal interpretations of the Bible. It is a privilege to be part of this global movement.”
EFOGE is a sister organization to CBE and “exists to offer biblical challenge to patriarchal cultures that result in social injustices and oppression against females.” EFOGE and CBE have collaborated on many projects, including jointly hosting a conference in Limuru, Kenya in 2012. Haddad’s participation in EFOGE’s latest project is a continuation of this strong partnership.
Haddad will join several East African religious and academic leaders for the lecture series. Other speakers include the Rt. Rev. Johannes Angela, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Bondo; Rev. Prof. David Kodia, principal of the Bishop Okullu College of Theology; Rev. Domnic Omolo Misolo, executive director of EFOGE; Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango, senior lecturer and dean of students at St. Paul’s University, Limuru, Kenya; and Prof. Charles Oduke, head of the department of Religion and Philosophy at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, Bondo, Kenya.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based ministry and service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online bookstore, and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
