Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Axel Christiansen, and Aronson to Highlight Kaminski's January Modern Sale
Beverly, MA (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- Once again, Kaminski Auctions of Beverly, Massachusetts is preparing a high-quality Twentieth Century Modern Design auction, scheduled for Sunday, January 12, 2014. This sale features an array of mid-century modern furniture, sculpture, and contemporary fine art, which predominantly spans the second half of the last century.
Early in the sale bidders will find a stunning Danish Modern rosewood credenza by Axel Christiansen, having four sliding doors with beautiful carved handles and signed with an applied foil label on the interior. This particular design is attributed to Gunni Omann. This lot is preceded by a pair of Hans Wegner designer chairs manufactured by Johannes of Copenhagen, Denmark, and are fashioned of solid teak with leather insets. Perhaps among the most exciting of all furnishings are a gorgeous pair of Swedish “onion” lamps of monumental size featuring a sophisticated grey-green hued glaze, original parchment shades and original matching ceramic finials. True design collectors will also not want to miss any of the additional names on view such as George Nelson for Herman Miller, Arne Norell, Knoll and Plycraft.
Sculptural items of note include two bronze works by David Aronson, “Violinist” and “False Messiah”. The latter work is mounted on a stone base, bearing a foundry mark and beautifully applied patination, while the former sits atop a wooden base and is editioned 119 of 200. Additionally, an obscure item to watch for is attributed to Alexander Calder and is thought to be an exact replica of “Jeune Fille et sa Suite” (Young Woman and Her Suitors). Calder was commissioned to construct the large-scale sculpture for the grounds outside the AT&T building located in Detroit, Michigan during the early 1970s. The likely model, which pre-dates the countrywide transition to “Calder red”, is encased in an acrylic cube bearing an applied label on the exterior that reads “From Michigan Bell General Engineering Department.”
For the contemporary fine art collector, Kaminski Auctions is pleased to offer an exceptional lithograph by Christo, known as “Wrapped Trees, Project for Avenue de Champs Elysees, Paris”. The color lithograph bears transparent polyethylene attached using staples, thread and felt marker additions. Dated 1987, this artist’s proof is editioned 21 of 45 and is hand signed in pencil. The current owners were awarded the piece at a benefit auction supporting Ovarian Cancer Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 2007. This striking work was a direct donation to the auction from the personal collection of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, prior to Jeanne-Claude’s death in 2009. Of additional interest to fine art collectors is a strong work by Robert Natkin from his highly regarded “Field Mouse” series; a first edition copy of “Picasso Linoleum Cuts: Bacchanals, Women, Bulls and Bullfighters”, copyright 1962 in original cloth jacket and a beautiful oil on masonite abstract, “Untitled Bull” by Elaine de Kooning, the wife of renowned Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning.
