Chrysalis all set to open at Traverse
Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB UK) 15 October 2015 -- Tickets are on sale and selling well for Chrysalis, boosted by the popular Festival Pass options available to see anything from one to all four performances.
Cabinet Secretary Fiona Hyslop MSP will open the first Chrysalis festival on Friday 6 November, marking the start of two days of a selection of the best young theatre and new writing in the UK. Theatre groups from Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester perform their own work which addresses a variety of contemporary issues.
These include Junction 25's award winning work i'd rather humble than hero: a reflection on society's cultural obsessions, Contact Young Company's exploration into our attitudes around sex in Under the Covers, and two very different takes on modern urban life with 20 Stories High's performance of Headz and Citzens Young Co.'s verbatim play Southside Stories.
Guy Hollands, one of the directors of Citizens Young Co.’s Southside Stories, says, “We are delighted to have been invited to take part in the Chrysalis Festival. Southside Stories is the result of a rewarding learning experience for the Young Co., producing their first verbatim production and writing and performing their own original music. To perform this piece using the words of people from all walks of life in Govanhill at the Chrysalis festival is a fantastic way for us to share some of the experiences of this diverse community with a wider audience beyond Glasgow.”
The two days of performances by the four theatre groups, part of the national Call to Create, is complemented by a programme of talks and events with invited speakers, looking at the position of youth theatre in an international context and the profile of performance by young people in the media. Chrysalis is a new theatre festival and the only platform of its kind in Scotland for ambitious and provocative performance by young theatre-makers. 20 STORIES HIGH (Liverpool)
20 Stories High is an award-winning theatre company based in Toxteth, creating dynamic, challenging theatre which attracts new, young audiences while pushing the boundaries of what is theatre. Headz is a collection of monologues which gives a gritty, challenging and humorous insight to the contemporary lives of Liverpool’s young people.
CITIZENS THEATRE YOUNG COMPANY (Glasgow)
Citizens Theatre Young Company celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2015. Over the years, the company has performed a very broad range of work, from Shakespeare to new writing. Based at Glasgow’s famous Citizens’ Theatre, the company offers opportunities to young people aged 18 to 22 in acting, writing and devising. Southside Stories is a new piece which draws on interviews with people who live and work in the dynamic and diverse Govanhill area of Glasgow and features original live music.
JUNCTION 25 (Glasgow)
Formed in 2005, Junction 25 began as a response to a feeling about the need to represent the voices of young people in contemporary performance. I’d Rather Humble than Hero, which explores society’s fascination with fame, celebrity and image, was created by the ensemble of Junction 25, winners of the 2015 CATS Whiskers award.
CONTACT YOUNG COMPANY (Manchester)
Contact Young Company is a renowned young ensemble of performers, actors, dancers, musicians, poets and MCs based at Contact in Manchester. Each year they create brand-new shows in collaboration with national and international artists. Under The Covers examines young people’s contemporary attitudes to sex, questioning myths and breaking down taboos.

Youth Theatre Arts Scotland is the national development organisation for youth theatre. Our mission is to transform lives through youth theatre by developing inspiring participatory opportunities for young people in Scotland, and by connecting, supporting and training the professionals who work with them.
