Cigar Advisor Magazine Publishes Piece on the History of Sazerac
(PRWEB) December 16, 2013 -- The all-new Cigar Advisor Magazine is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigars to thousands of smokers. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle. The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers, and much more. Cigar Advisor Magazine has posted a new feature story titled, "The Spirit of New Orleans: The Sazerac." Cigar Advisor contributor, Bob "The Rev" Meyn, who wrote about the Sazerac for Cigar Advisor several years ago, revisits the indigenous drink in much more detail.
“The drink that eventually came to be known as a Sazerac was actually born in a pharmacy,” writes The Rev. “Antoine Peychaud, a Creole apothecary of Haitian descent, set up shop in the French Quarter in the early 19th Century. In addition to dispensing his traditional ‘medicines,’ Peychaud formulated a gentian-based bitters recipe in his New Orleans pharmacy around the year 1830 and began selling it after-hours for ‘medicinal purposes.’”
Cognac was used in the original recipe, but during the late 19th century, an epidemic of the grape phylloxera, a louse that feeds on the roots and leaves of grapevines, nearly wiped out the French vineyards that produce the grapes used to produce Cognac. With Cognac almost impossible to get, Rye was used as a substitute.
The Rev also discusses the role Absinthe played in the original recipe. The popular French liqueur was replaced with Herbsaint, following “a rather nasty smear campaign by the growing numbers of prohibitionists in the United States.”
For readers who are interested in pairing their cigars with a Sazerac, The Rev notes the kind of cigars that go best with the drink. For those who want to try making a Sazerac at home, the recipe is also included.
