Citizens Travel to Washington with Campaign to Fix the Debt
Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 26, 2013 -- On Thursday, 50 concerned citizens representing the Campaign to Fix the Debt went to Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of confronting our unsustainable national debt. The group discussed the need for a comprehensive, bipartisan solution to our country’s long-term fiscal imbalance, and talked about how the current political and economic uncertainty is hurting the country.
“I came to DC to urge our elected leaders that the time has come for them to work together and start making the tough decisions necessary to get our nation’s fiscal house in order,” said Joe Galli, Executive Director of the North Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. “Instead of continuing to govern by crisis, Washington should put in place a long-term plan to bring down our national debt as a share of the economy over the long-term. This would create the certainty that businesses and families need to start planning for the future, invest, and help our economy grow.”
In total, 50 people from 13 states came to Washington as part of the “fly-in” organized by the Campaign to Fix the Debt, a national, non-profit, and bipartisan organization whose goal is to push our elected leaders to tackle the national debt. Collectively, these citizen-activists called on the 50 elected leaders they met with to stop governing by crisis; start honest, bipartisan negotiations; and solve our fiscal problems, once and for all.
“Having so many people from coast to coast come to Washington to talk about the debt is really a big deal,” said Maya MacGuineas, head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt. “Making sure lawmakers know that the public will be behind them as they make the tough decisions to fix our debt problem is essential to this process. Our elected leaders need to know that tough reforms that right our fiscal ship will make for good politics in addition to good policy.”
The Campaign to Fix the Debt is a non-partisan movement asking lawmakers to work together on legislation large enough to stabilize and reduce the national debt as a share of the economy. Members come from a broad range of social, economic and political perspectives with the belief that America's growing debt burden threatens our future, and that we must address it now. The Campaign will mobilize key communities – including leaders from business, government, and policy – and people all across America who want to see elected officials step up to solve our nation's fiscal challenges.
