City of Perris, THINK Together and Chef Lee Burton Partner for a Healthier Community
Perris, California (PRWEB) July 30, 2014 -- THINK Together and the City of Perris are joining forces through the Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention Branch Grant and the Riverside County Department of Public Health to support and encourage the implementation of nutrition education through the use of Harvest of the Month materials provided by the California Department of Public Health. This project will encourage and embrace health and wellness within the Perris Community as part of a larger campaign throughout the City of Perris and County of Riverside to empower residents to advocate for increased access to healthy food and safe physical activity opportunities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who are considered obese are 70% more likely to continue being obese into adulthood. Grant funds for this partnership will be allocated to promote healthier lifestyles, which will be implemented through the collaboration of various partnerships.
Chef Lee will administer nutrition education with the support of a THINK Together staff member. He will plan and facilitate interactive nutrition education activities for THINK Together students of different age groups in the Perris Elementary School District. Chef Lee will also participate in the development of a Chef in the Classroom program.
This partnership’s vision is to expose students to fresh produce and healthy eating habits, utilizing a fun and interactive approach. Chef Lee Burton will demonstrate and teach students how to prepare healthy snacks, for students to prepare and sample.

About Live Well Perris
The City of Perris created its “Live Well Perris” healthy-eating active-living initiative last year and was so pleased with the results that it sought, and was granted, a nearly $1 million grant to expand the program. The program has included a Perris version of “the biggest loser” weight-loss competition, which has drawn nearly 800 participants in 2013 and 2014; a series of walks, hikes and bicycle rides led by Mayor Daryl Busch and other members of the City Council; a series of weekend workouts that routinely drew more than 100 participants and a weekly “Step Out to Work Out” exercise class attended by elected officials. Live Well Perris events scheduled for 2014 include aquatics, baseball, soccer and skateboarding sports clinics, a hike at the Lake Perris State Recreation Area and the third annual “Tour De Perris” bicycle rides from City Hall to various locations around southwest Riverside County.
