Claremont Lincoln Events to Spotlight Global Thought-Leaders on Ethics
CLAREMONT, Calif. (PRWEB) September 19, 2014 -- Success in business doesn’t hinge on beating out the competition in a dog-eat-dog society. In fact, some of the world’s most successful enterprises are headed by peace-loving followers of Jainism: an Indian religion that rejects the notion of a Supreme Being and advocates respect and non-violence toward all living things.
Several global experts in the areas of finance, business, nonprofits and social causes will speak at a series of events being hosted in October by Claremont Lincoln University. They will talk about what it’s meant to them to balance business and belief, the role that ethics plays in their lives, how it made them successful at what they do, and why respect for living things and non-violence are important in all aspects of life.
The events include a two-day conference, featuring top financial experts and the founding president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, among many others. A special awards ceremony and dinner will honor D.R. Mehta, a man whose humanitarian efforts have led to fitting more than 1.3 million people around the world with free prosthetic limbs. The International Jain Conference takes place Oct. 3-4 at the Garrison Theater, 1030 Columbia Ave., Claremont. It features several prominent speakers on business and ethics, including:
- Prem Jain, a top executive at Cisco, with an extensive background in entrepreneurship, innovation and philanthropy
- Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the largest animal rights organization in the world
- Vallabh Bhansali, a leading investment banker, venture capitalist and market expert, who is cofounder and chairman of Enam Financial Consultants
- Atul Shah, an internationally noted author and economist, whose work has been published and broadcast around the world
The second annual Claremont Lincoln University Ahimsa Award Ceremony and Dinner takes place from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Jain Center of Southern California, 8072 Commonwealth Ave., Buena Park.
- This year’s Ahimsa (non-violence) award will be presented to D.R. Mehta, a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India and founder of the world’s largest organization for the treatment and fitting of free artificial limbs for the poor, known as the Jaipur Foot. His humanitarian work – which resulted in fitting more than 1.3 million people in 26 countries with free limbs, calipers and aids -- earned him the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s most prestigious awards.
Historically, members of the Jain community have avoided trades and business practices that inflicted violence on other forms of life and compromised their supreme vow of Ahimsa, or non-violence. This led them to pursue work with stones, as stones are seen to as not have souls, as well as careers in banking and finance.
