Clinical Experts on Trauma and Addiction to Speak at Elements Behavioral Health Symposia
Needham, MA (PRWEB) May 05, 2015 -- An all-star panel of authorities in trauma and addiction will discuss the relationship between complex trauma and intimacy, disordered eating and addiction at conferences on May 8 in Needham, Mass., and on July 17 in Tysons, Va. The speakers will also appear as special guests at a complimentary dinner on May 7 at Spiga Ristorante in Needham.
The panel includes Dr. Pamela Peeke, a physician, nutrition scientist and New York Times bestselling author; Robert Weiss, LCSW, author, international clinical educator and subject expert on intimacy disorders and sexual addiction; and Dr. Christine Courtois, a trauma specialist, award-winning author and psychologist.

Treatment of Complex Trauma: A Sequenced Relationship-Based Approach -- Dr. Courtois, PhD, ABPP
Dr. Courtois, national clinical trauma consultant for Promises Treatment Centers®, will detail a recommended sequence of treatment for trauma in three primary phases, each with associated tasks. “Complex trauma presents enormous challenges for therapists,” says Dr. Courtois. “The sequence of treatment, the therapeutic relationship, spiritual issues and the presence of co-occurring disorders all play a role in recovery,” she says. “This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of treatment approaches.”
Food, Addiction and Recovery: A New Approach to Healing the Body-Mind – Dr. Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP
Dr. Peeke, senior science advisor for Elements Behavioral Health, will present scientific advances in the area of nutrition and addiction recovery. “We’re seeing more and more quality research on this subject,” says Dr. Peeke. “Recent studies funded by NIH’s National Institute of Drug Abuse have found similarities in the way certain drugs and specific foods affect the brain’s reward center. We will look at how we can apply this research in clinical practice and use this information to develop comprehensive nutrition and lifestyle plans for clients.”
