Clutha Disaster Sparks Concern Over Police Helicopters
(PRWEB UK) 24 January 2014 -- The nation was left shocked and saddened when news of the police helicopter crash in the Clutha pub in Glasgow’s City Centre spread throughout the whole of the UK on the 29th November 2013.
This recent tragedy is not the first of its kind and has led to a debate on whether police helicopters are actually performing a necessary function for the protection of civilians.
Police helicopters are used for a variety of reasons, including the transporting of injured people and to catch criminals through the use of spotlighting and photography.
Richard Banham, a helicopter pilot who has also trained in the Army spoke of police helicopters by saying, “Helicopters' versatility really comes to the fore with the police." There are functions used by the helicopters that wouldn’t be possible by vehicles and may lead to criminals escaping from the scene of the crime without any evidence to incriminate them.
Police helicopters are also often used to locate missing people.
A spokesperson for the Accident Advice Helpline, a leading law firm who specialise in compensation claim, spoke of the recent police helicopter accident by saying, “Although this type of accident is rare, we cannot underestimate the tragedy which has resulted and the loss of precious lives.”
He added, “An accident of this nature may have been completely unavoidable but it reinforces the fact that we are not as invincible as we may think at times and need to take care in any situation. In a time where we seem to constantly be hearing about accidents, whether freak accidents or carelessness, we should always be aware of our actions on and off the road and take care of ourselves and those around us.”
