With open enrollment season upon us once again, brokers should seize this opportunity to increase sales and strengthen relationships with key clients. Here are some tips to maximize profits and enhance the broker/client relationship during this time.
- Prepare in advance. Now is the time to reach out to clients so you can begin to share insight on how you can partner with them to streamline the open enrollment process. Conduct pre-enrollment meetings to assess their needs and begin to gather data on items such as plan providers and insurance preferences. Eliminate options that were unused or not used often the previous year.
- Present many options. There are a variety of packages on the market when it comes to benefits. High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs), while continuing to be popular, are only part of the benefit picture. Progressive employers are pairing HDHPs with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) so employees can tailor programs to their specific situations. Do your homework and educate clients—and their employees—on the pros and cons of each option.
- Implement active enrollment. Brokers must partner with clients to create an active open enrollment—meaning that all employees must re-apply for their health plan. Then, clients can promote the plans they would like their employees to enroll in. It also provides an additional opportunity for clients to educate their employees on the options that are available. As a result, employees may re-assess their needs.
- Promote wellness programs. This year, workplace wellness programs are poised to be one of the top benefit offerings. Promoting this during open enrollment will not only show your employees you are willing to invest in their physical and emotional well-being, it can reduce costs as healthier employees are likely to spend less on healthcare. Additionally, wellness programs can attract—and retain—fresh, new talent in the workplace!
